Watching A Horror Movie For 90 Minutes Can Help You Burn 150 Calories, Finds Study

A 90-minute horror film can help you burn up to 150 calories, the equivalent of a half-hour walk, according to a study done by the University of Westminster. While watching ten popular horror films, participants' heart rates, oxygen intake, and carbon dioxide emission were monitored. The scariest movies with a lot of jump scares burnt the most calories.

Do you like to watch horror movies? If this is the case, you'll be relieved to learn that your favorite hobby can also help you lose weight. According to researchers at the University of Westminster, a 90-minute horror film can help you burn roughly 150 calories, which is equivalent to a fast jog or a 30-minute walk. How does this work? Let us investigate.

The Lovefilm-funded study featured ten individuals who watched ten different horror films while wearing equipment that recorded their heart rate, oxygen intake, and carbon dioxide output.

The researchers discovered that watching a horror film raised the participants' heart rate and metabolism, which resulted in more calories burnt. The number of calories burned varied based on the film and the individual, but a 90-minute horror film burned about 150 calories on average.

In addition, the study identified the top ten horror films in terms of calories burned. The top three films were The Shining (184 calories), Jaws (161 calories), and The Exorcist (158 calories). These films frequently featured jump-scare sequences that raised viewers' heart rates and adrenaline levels.

"It is this release of fast-acting adrenaline, produced during short bursts of intense stress (or, in this case, fear), that is known to lower appetite, increase basal metabolic rate, and ultimately burn a higher level of calories," Dr Richard Mackenzie, senior lecturer and specialist in cell metabolism and physiology at the University of Westminster, explained.

Watching horror flicks, especially around Halloween, can be a fun and easy method to burn calories. This is not to say that you should stop exercising and eating well. To keep a healthy weight and lifestyle, watching horror films is insufficient. You must continue to eat healthily and exercise regularly. Horror flicks, on the other hand, are a great way to spice up your movie night and scare yourself crazy.
